Papers of the Albemarle Soapstone Company, 1885-1907, 1919-1936.

The collection consists of the business papers of the company and of two associate businesses, the Nelson and Albemarle Railway Company and the Virginia Soapstone Company of Schuyler, Va. The papers, presumably compiled by William L. Harrison, purchasing agent for all three companies, contain correspondence, orders and invoices, bound volumes, receipts and accounts, bank checks, company store scrip and scrip receipts, drawings and diagrams of products and some of the records of the Alberene postmaster. Early material consists chiefly of orders from other companies for soapstone products. Employee time books for 1891-1895 are also present. A large amount of material concerns purchases made by the company through Harrison, 1907-1907. The correspondence files, [1888?]-1904, consist chiefly of communications concerning orders and sales between company partner James H. Serene of the New York City home office, George M. Lee of the Chicago, Ill., office and salesroom, and the quarries. Correspondence files, 1905-1907, consist of similar correspondence between Richard Flynn of the New York office and Harrison. Local companies represented in the orders and invoices series include Carbolane Slate Company, Esmont; Charles King & Son Company, Charlottesville; Charlottesville Hardware Company; Charlottesville Lumber Company; H.C. Marchant Manufacturing Company, Charlottesville; J.H. Linney, Charlottesville; R.C. Vandegrift & Sons, Charlottesville; Scottsville Merchandise Company; and Smith Brothers, North Garden.
